The port of New Orleans is currently starting development of a new international container port in St Bernard parish.

The current facilities are largely inadequate for large container ships, and have to deal with congestion of barges moving in and out of the Mississippi River. During hurricane season, large ships are also unworkable inland on the Mississippi River because of many tight curves.

The Nashville Warf is the main destination for container ships. It has NO ship to shore cranes. Ships must unload using their own deck cranes.

The adjacent Port America terminal seems to have perhaps six cranes, but looks very disorganized from Google Earth, and seems to have minimal business.
